Jam The Van

For students

Bring Jam The Van to your school.

Sophie and Pia came up with the idea in year 10. You can bring the campaign to your school in just the same way. Here's how to get started.

Step by step

How to bring the campaign to your school.

  1. 1

    Find teammates

    Talk to your student council

Tell your student council about the campaign. It's easier to convince people as a group, and the student council knows how things work at your school.

  2. 2

    Support

    Win over a teacher

Find a teacher who backs the idea, for example the teacher who supports the student council or your form tutor. Give them the info text further down.

  3. 3

    Permission

    Ask your head teacher

Write to your head teacher, ideally together with the student council and your teacher. You can use the email template further down.

  4. 4

    Planning

    Suggest a date

Choose a week for collecting that isn't during the holidays or an exam period. You'll also need a room for collecting and one hour in the assembly hall.

  5. 5

    Contact

    Write to us

Tell us which school you're at and how far you've got. We'll plan the rest with you. If you have questions, you can get in touch earlier too.

Pitch video Show this to your student council. We introduce the campaign in the assembly hall with a short video. You can also use it to convince your student council, a teacher or your head teacher.

Subject: Food drive for the Tafel at [School]

[Dear Mrs … / Dear Mr …],

My name is [Name] and I'm in class [Class]. I would like to bring a Jam The Van food drive to [School].

Jam The Van organises school food drives for the Tafel, Germany's network of food banks. The initiative started in 2023 as a school project by two students in year 10.

This is how the campaign works:
1. The campaign is introduced in the assembly hall, together with a short video.
2. For one week, students bring in non-perishable food and toiletries.
3. On counting day, the Jam The Van team checks every donation.
4. The local Tafel collects the donations.

For this, the school provides one week, a room for collecting and one hour in the assembly hall. Jam The Van does the planning together with us.

I would like to suggest [preferred time]. The student council and [teacher's name] support the idea.

Would you have time for a short conversation? I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards
[Name], class [Class]

Short info for teachers
Jam The Van – a food drive for the Tafel

What it's about: For one week, a school collects non-perishable food and toiletries for the local Tafel, part of Germany's network of food banks. Jam The Van started in 2023 as a school project by two students in year 10 and plans the campaign together with the school.

How it works:
1. Pitch in the assembly hall with a short video
2. One week of collecting, right at school
3. Counting day: the team checks every donation (unopened, best-before date not passed)
4. Handover: the Tafel collects the crates

What the school needs: a collection week, a room for collecting and one hour in the assembly hall. Having a teacher as contact person makes coordination easier.

Good to know: Jam The Van is currently being founded as an association. Its charitable status has not been recognised yet, so donation receipts are not possible yet.

To be honest

We do this as volunteers.

We're four volunteers, so we can't take on every request straight away. Write to us anyway: we'll get back to you and tell you honestly whether and when it works for us.

So we can reply.

We only use your details to answer your request. More in our privacy policy.
